Pool Closure

Yep. You read it right. Yesterday afternoon my life was turned upside down. (To explain, due to the posibility of public viewing, I will use abbreviations). Our pool is closing. Technically it's unofficial until tonight when DCoach actually has the meeting and hears it...but after our meet he basically said it doesn't look good. So. Let me explain why this ruins everything. I will try and be brief, but I'm not sure I'll do a good job because I'm a LITTLE fired up. Ok. So. This all started in:
  • July. We heard during the summer that the pool was closing. We freaked out, but calmed down when we found out that we had pool time booked at The Math School Down the Street. This was not ideal, of course, but hey we could swim. Then we found out, 'ohhh heeeyy it's open until December 31st!!' We said, 'fuck yeah!', cancelled our time at The Math School Down the Street and were very happy.
  • November. We find out it's closing. Now we are devastated. "A, what about The Math School Down the Street pool time?" For the purposes of this possibly public blog entry, I shall call a man C, and my coach D. C wanted Ds job. C is notorious for going in to city clubs, overtraining athletes, burning them out before they reach full potential, and then moving on to new cities, overtaking other coaches, and doing the same thing. Now, of course RSwimming (the club D coaches) said, 'um C you're an idiot, we know what you do, Ds been coaching forever, get the eff out of here.' C gets pretty pissed. Decides to start his own club, who train at The Math School Down the Street. He says, anything that D does cannot be done with my club in this pool. So. We severed ties with TMSDTS in July, C overbooked his TMSDTS pool time, and now Our School cannot train there. RSwimming has alternate pool times, but Our School does not. So C sits back and laughs, because he has successfully cut Ds salary in half (if Our School Varsity does not continue. And it does not look good).
  • Three Years Ago: Our School had the money needed to repair the pool and spent it on football. Our School could have switched the lighting in the pool to more energy-efficient bulbs, which would have saved the money needed to repair the pool.
  • Long Term Plans: There are none. However, there is something called 'lease-to-own'. This is where Our School says, 'prior to the leaks / repairs needed, we were willing to put up X amount of dollars to run the pool. Hey private contractors, build us a pool for that X amount of dollars!' Yes, it costs more in the long run. However, it isn't just Varsity and RSwimming that uses that pool. It is a community pool, and is never empty unless it is closed. Plus, with our economy as it is, that really is the only way to build anything. Basically it works like a mortgage.
  • Final Points: There have been whisperings of building a satellite campus / building bigger residences to up Our School's numbers. My response: If you can put up money to build a satellite campus, why the eff can't you fix the pool? Also: I turned down 5 other school BECAUSE Our School is small. I don't fucking want a satellite campus, nor does over half of Our School, probably 99.95% of us. Also: Of those 5 schools, I had scholarships to 3, and 2 were getting a new pool facility. Also: How would it feel to be one of THREE schools in all of Ontario to not have a pool? We would be likened to Nippissing, OCAD, and Algoma. Where the fuck is Algoma? Oh yes, that's right, no one knows because no one goes there, therefore it doesn't need a goddamn pool. And, "OMMMGGG NO WWAYY Ontario School of Art and Design doesn't have a pool? I NEVER would have guessed!" Nippissing surprises me. Also: Windsor and Ryerson have pools and no team. Um. Yeah. Let's not get started on that.

Ok that's enough. Basically we find out what it means in terms of our Varsity program tomorrow at 5pm. We have a meeting with the Athletic Director, and we officially hear the news, good or bad, tomorrow morning at practice. I am by no means the best swimmer in the world, nor on the team. But I will not have my swimming career cut short. I don't know what that means for next year. If there is no team, I move schools. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Novemburrr (but not really cause its not that cold as of late)

Welll. I dunno. Last weekend I went to New Jersey for a regatta and it was totally worth it. Like our team got second place and we had a chance for first but me and my skipper had a reeeaaallly bad race (17th amongst many of our first place finishes, but I must say it was not completely our fault), kinda because the other boat got stuck on our boat and any chance we had of catching up to the boats in front of us dissappeared like cookies in a room full of fat kids. Anyhoo. It was good and I pretty much didn't have to spend any money on food for the whole weekend, which left me some to spend at duty free, aka why is alcohol so cheap when its at duty free? Who knows, but its good that way. Which I guess leads to this weekend. (During the week I did nothing cause I have almost no work and now no sailing, which means I have way too much time on my hands and nothing to do during that time.) This weekend. Oh man. Friday night was the ushe, drink, go out whatevs. Some guys were playing century club, which means that they have to take a shot of beer every minute for 100 minutes. Its an engineer thing cause then they get a badge to put on their ridiculous leather jackets. Last night, uh people started playing flipcup at 4:30, maybe 5:00 in the afternoon. Yeah ridics. The guy took off his cupboard door and was using that on top of two chairs as the flipcup table, which a) got covered! in beer, b) had a great wall of china constructed down the middle of it using beer cans (it was 2 wide and 2 high and ran the entire length of the table, and a third layer was under construction, also the table was like 6 feet long) and c)got pulled down by the guy whos door it was because he was too drunk and always does stupid shit / makes an ass out of himself when he gets drunk. Then later (like 10?) we went out, couldn't get into Legendz cause its lame in the first place and last week or so they got busted by the cops for having minors in there, so now they double piece everyone, which I dont have. So no go. Meh. Well we decided to go home after that I guess and we did nothing and I went to sleep. Now, tonight. I know bad news. Why you ask? Sailing social. They are always bad news. This is aided by the fact that it is on a SUNDAY NIGHT. Always on the most inconvenient nights. BUt worth it all the same. We'll see. I may or may not be going to my morning classes tomorrow. P.S. Did everyone get the secret santa thing I gto my friend to send out??

Actually...

To be honest Priss, I have nothing to say about that post! Except that you're not dumb, school blows, and just get done what you can! Trust me, I was in the exact same boat, and I know how much it blows. And if you can't study something, you can't study something. Simple as that. And if it makes you feel better, I have seven papers due this month! Yaayyyy!!!!!! :P Ok so, results of my swim meet. I did very very well for myself. I didn't make all of my meet goals, but I got PBs (personal bests) in nearly everything. As follows:
  • 4 x 200 Free Relay (2.24.40 - PB by 5 Seconds)
  • 50 Back (33.33 - PB)
  • 200 Back (2.35.00 - PB but I can do better)
  • 4 x 50 Medley Relay (33.74 - Backstroke)
  • 100 Free (1.05.50 - 40 miliseconds off my PB)
  • 100 Back (1.11.20 - PB)
  • 4 x 50 Free Relay (30.00 - PB, and so FUCKING close to breaking 30!! ARGH)

So my main point of frustration is the 50 Free. My coach didn't come with us (he had Tom come instead because Dean was busy with something), anyway, Tom was like, 'I COULD say you swam a 29.99, ...but I won't." I was like fuuuccckkk. SO CLOSE! I'll do it at the next meet = Divisionals = Two Weeks Away!!! I'm most proud of the 200 Free - I fucking hate that event, and yet I got a PB by 5 seconds. How does that happen you ask? Well I really can't tell you. I swam it a different way, and apparently it paid off! My meet goal was a 1.10 in the 100 Back...so close. It was still a PB though, so that's ok!! Also, I think my body is succumbing to a cold. I am not pleased about this; I haven't been sick ONCE yet, all year. FML. Anyhoo. Halloween Stories....GO!

... GET OFF THE INTERWEBNETS AND GO STUDY. GAWWRRGGHH.

The title pretty much sums it all up. Lucky for me it's a SUNDAY. Some infotainment for you:
  • I feel a bit like crying when I think about the upcoming week. I know I promise I wasn't going to complain about school this semester... but I have my Vector Calculus midterm, Mechanics of Deformable Bodies I midterm, and Computer Aided Analysis II midterm on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday respectively. Because I'm stupid, studying for these three is much like banging your head against a metal wall (yes, the wall MUST be metal). It's incredibly painful, and generally fruitless. I spent about four (sporadic) hours studying the Taylor Series yesterday and all I have to show for it is the ability to solve an approximation incorrectly past the first iteration. Whatever, I'm fully switching into midwifery. Thoughts on this?

  • Creeping around our blog results in the following: I have noticed that in September we had 26 entries. This is excellentastic. However, in October we had only 13 entries. Now, being the amazing math student that I obviously am, *secretly whips out calculator and pecks at it very slowly* that is TWICE as many entries in September as in October. I blame Emily and her grand total of like one post. Let's pick it up.

  • I'm obsessed with the X Factor. For those of you who don't know what that is (i.e. ... all of you), it's basically a kind of American-Idol-ish show in the UK (everything in the UK is better) and Simon Fuller is definitely one of the judges. And Cheryl Cole (i.e. wife of Major Jerkface Cashley Cole and amazingly horrific singer in Girls Aloud, a less talented and less campy version of the Spice Girls) is definitely another one of the judges. And Danni Minogue (i.e. Kylie Minogue's sister) is definitely one of the other judges. And Louis Walsch (i.e. WESTLIFE'S MANAGER EEEE!) is definitely the other judge. Anyways, it's like American Idol except better because instead of just people bands and groups and stuff can also enter and you know who was an X Factor winner awhile ago? Leona Lewis, you know, who sang Bleeding Love? It's also better because it ends right before Christmas and then the winner releases a song and everyone waits to see if it wins the UK Christmas number one cause that's like a huge deal and it's always like OMG WHO IS GOING TO WINNIT WE DON'T KNOW (and one year Bob the Builder definitely beat Westlife). Anyways, so yes, it's a very excellent show and I wish that it came on the teletube here so I wouldn't have to watch it on Youtube. And people would know what I was talking about when I talk about it. If you want to hear a very excellent singer you should YouTube Diana Vickers. She does funny things with her hands when she sings and uptalks the lyrics weirdly but she's good anyways.

  • I'm going to sit here patiently and wait for Amy to make a post making fun of me for this post. I don't just expect it, I anticipate it. Don't disappoint me, Hucal.

Happy Halloween!

  • I have no halloween plans because I have a swim meet in Sudbury tomorrow! Actually I lied, I'm going for dinner with Tom and his family and his BFFs. But that's every Friday, so they aren't really Halloween plans. I just contradicted myself twice. ANYhoo.
  • So i swim 200 Back, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Free, 50 Back this weekend. Wish me luck ladies! I'll let you know how I do because I know you are all so interested in my life.
  • Response to Emily's Side Note: [Recall Side Note: why are all superheroines either really slutty or really butch? i dont get it.] To perpetuate the idea that women are strictly objects of the male gaze. If they are otherwise (strong and tough and independant) they are lesbians. This is part of why I object to Halloween. Actually a really huge part. However, I hope you have fun tonight!!! :)

What do you do when its cold and snowing and ridiculously windy?

Sail of course! I mean, what else would you do in weather like that? So essentially it was just ridiculous, and I may or may not have been sailing for my life, cause me and my skipper are not heavy weather. But it turned out fine, noone died and well, it continued to snow. As for this past weekend it went wellish. I didn't like the person I sailed with, I thought they did a poor job as a skipper. On the other hand, me and Maddie and Alex (my sailing friends) now have something to laugh about all the time (aka the way josh talk s and what he says etc.) Anyhoo on Saturday it was gusting up to 40 knots (74km/h) and they did actually postpone it for about an hour because everyone was capsizing and not really getting anywhere, meaning quite an unproductive race. And sunday was slightly better, but only slightly. We had some almost good races, but somehow Josh always seemed to lose us a couple spots when we had the potential to do decently well. Meh. Got bakc on Monday morning at 3am, took us about 11ish hours, including many stops, so we pretty much cut off a couple of hours from the way there. But dont ask how. Also ODU is a really nice university, with its own sailing centre and a boathouse for their fleets of like 20FJs and I dunno, like 1o lasers. And the its H-oween. Thursday will be the sailing social, themed dead toga (how the romans look today) and friday I am undecided on a costume, maybe librarian, maybe pirate....maybe pirate librarian. Who knows....
